单词 importance
释义

importancen.

Brit. /ɪmˈpɔːt(ə)ns/, U.S. /ᵻmˈpɔrtns/
Forms: late Middle English–1500s importans, late Middle English–1600s importaunce, 1500s emportaunce, 1500s ymportaunce, 1500s–1600s emportance, 1500s–1600s ymportance, 1500s– importance.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French importance ; import v., -ance suffix.
Etymology: Partly (i) (in branch I.) < Middle French importance (French importance ) fact or quality of being important (a1444), important matter, affair of consequence (third quarter of the 15th cent.), personal consequence or standing (third quarter of the 15th cent.), apparently < Italian importanza fact or quality of being important (a1432), important matter, affair of consequence (although this is apparently first attested later than in French: a1519), authority, influence, prestige (although this is apparently first attested later than in French: a1543; < importare import v. + -anza -ance suffix), and partly (ii) (in branches II. and III.) < import v. + -ance suffix (although import v. is first attested later in the sense relevant to branch II.: see import v. 2). Compare Old Occitan emportansa , importansa (15th cent.), Spanish importancia (a1449), Portuguese importância (1501), and also post-classical Latin importantia gravity, weight, consequence (from 1423 in continental sources; 1496 in a British source). Compare earlier important adj. With the use in senses of branch III. compare slightly earlier import n. I. Sense 7 arose by association with importunate adj., importune adj., and related words. With the forms in em- compare the formal variation at import v., and ultimately em- prefix.
I. The fact or quality of being important or urgent; that which is important.
1.
