Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ars nova.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ars nova, specific use (early 14th cent.) of classical Latin ars nova the new art < ars art n.1 + nova , feminine of novus new adj.The term is first attested in a musical context (in contradistinction to ars vetus or ars antiqua : see Ars Antiqua n.) in the works of several music theorists writing (in Latin) in the early 14th cent., and is particularly associated with the French composer Philippe de Vitry (1291–1361), although it does not, as is often claimed, appear in the title of any of his extant writings; compare:a1325 in C. E. H. de Coussemaker Scriptorum de musica medii aevi (1869) III. 371 Et veterem ac novam artem in isto compendiolo manifestare intendo... De nova arte quam Philippus de Vitriaco nuper invenit, dicam hoc modo.
Early Music.
The style of music and system of notation characteristic of western Europe in the 14th cent.; esp. the style of composition prevalent in France and Italy at this time, distinguished from that of the preceding era by greater polyphonic and rhythmic variety. Cf. Ars Antiqua n.
