Etymology: Middle English endetted , after Old French endetté, past participle of endetter to involve in debt, < en- (en- prefix1) + dette debt n.; compare Provençal endeptar , -deutar , Spanish endeudar , Italian indebitare (and medieval Latin indebitāre ) . In the 15–16th cent. the prefix was assimilated to in- prefix3 and the radical to debt n.
