Etymology: Medieval Latin: asa, latinized form of Persian azā mastic + fœtida, feminine of fœtidus ill-smelling, stinking.
a. A concreted resinous gum, with a strong alliaceous odour, procured in central Asia from the Narthex asafœtida and allied umbelliferous plants; used in medicine as an antispasmodic, and as a flavouring in made dishes.
