Origin: A borrowing from Icelandic. Etymon: Icelandic ásatrú.
Etymology: < Icelandic ásatrú (1885 in historical use denoting the early Scandinavian pagan religion, 1972 or earlier denoting the neopagan religion) < Old Icelandic ása , genitive plural of áss god (see Aesir n.) + trú belief (see truce n.), perhaps after Norwegian asatro early Scandinavian pagan religion (1873 in Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's libretto to Edvard Grieg's opera Olav Trygvason, or earlier).
The pagan polytheistic religion of early Scandinavians (historical). Now also: a neopagan religion based on this.
