Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin abelmosch.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin abelmosch (1623) < Italian abelmosch ( G. Pona Monte Baldo (1617) 29) < Arabic abū'l-misk , lit. ‘father (i.e. source) of musk’ < abū , construct state of ab father (cognate with Hebrew 'aḇ ) + al the + misk musk n. In later use after scientific Latin Abelmoschus, genus name ( F. K. Medicus Ueber einige künstliche Geschlechter aus der Malven-Familie (1787) 45). Compare French abelmosch, abelmosque (1723 as abel-mosc).
Any of several plants of the tropical genus Abelmoschus, esp. A. moschatus, with aromatic seeds which yield a musky oil, formerly used medicinally and as a substitute for animal musk (cf. musk okra n. at musk n. Compounds 5a), and A. esculentus, the plant okra, cultivated for its edible seed pods; these pods themselves.The genus Abelmoschus was formerly included in Hibiscus, but is now considered to be separate.
