Etymology: < classical Latin in nūbibus in the clouds < in in prep. + nūbibus , ablative plural of nūbēs cloud (see nubilous adj.).Compare the following earlier example of post-classical Latin in nubibus in an English legal text:1528–30 tr. T. Littleton Tenures (new ed.) iii. f. xlviii.v Me semeth that suche a thynge in suche a ryghte that is sayde in dyuers bookes to be in by obeyaunce is as moche to saye in latyn. s[cilicet]. talis res vel tale rectum que vel quod non est in homine ad tunc superstite sed tanto modo est et concestit in consideracione et intelligencia legis. &c. et quidam alii dixerunt talem rem aut talem rectum fore in nubibus. [Such a thing or such a right which is not vested in a person surviving at that time but only exists and consists in the consideration and understanding of the law &c.
