Used postpositively, designating a Roman Catholic bishop or archbishop: appointed to a see that is effectively defunct (esp. in territories in the Middle East, North Africa, etc., which were formerly under Christian control), and thereby holding the rank of bishop while having no obligation to live in or attend to a diocese; = in partibus infidelium adj.Most bishops in partibus served as auxiliary bishops in a diocese in a Christian country. The term was abolished in the late 19th cent. in favour of the term titular bishop (see titular bishop n. at titular n. and adj. Compounds).In quot. 1620 the word ‘bishop’ or ‘archbishop’ is implied.
