Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Ascones.
Etymology: < German Ascones, the name of a ‘natural family’ of sponges (E. Haeckel 1871, in Jenaische Zeitschr. f. Med. u. Naturwissensch. 6 648) < ancient Greek ἀσκός bag, sac (see ascus n.) + -nes in German Leucones (see leucon n.) or Sycones (see sycon n.).
Zoology.
The simplest type of sponge structure, characterized by a tube- or bag-like cavity lined with flagellated cells (choanocytes); a stage in sponge development typified by this structure; a sponge of this type or stage. Frequently attributive. Cf. leucon n., sycon n. 2.
