Etymology: < post-classical Latin in principio, greetings formula (see note), specific use of classical Latin in principiō in the beginning, which occurs in post-classical Latin in the opening of St John's Gospel and the book of Genesis (Vulgate) < in in prep. + principiō , ablative of principium principium n.The words in principio or in principio erat verbum (‘in the beginning was the word’) were used to indicate the first fourteen verses of St John's Gospel, which were popular in religious devotion in the Middle Ages. The shorter formulae were used by friars as a greeting and in exorcism (from the 12th cent.). In the following quotation Tyndale criticizes such use as an example of superstitious practices:1531 W. Tyndale Answere Mores Dialoge f. xxxvij And soch is that some hange apece of S. Ihons gospell aboute their neckes...Soch is the limeteriers sayenge of in principio erat verbum from housse to housse.
