单词 assault rifle
释义

assault riflen.

Brit. /əˈsɔːlt ˌrʌɪfl/, /əˈsɒlt ˌrʌɪfl/, U.S. /əˈsɔlt ˌraɪf(ə)l/, /əˈsɑlt ˌraɪf(ə)l/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; apparently modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: assault n., rifle n.3
Etymology: < assault n. + rifle n.3, apparently after German Sturmgewehr (1944 in Sturmgewehr 44, denoting a specific firearm produced 1943–5, originally under the name MP 44).
1. Originally U.S. A rifle designed for military use that is capable of both automatic and semi-automatic fire, is loaded by means of a magazine (as opposed to a belt, for example), and is designed for cartridges whose power is between that of a pistol cartridge and a full-powered rifle cartridge. Also more generally: any magazine-fed rifle capable of automatic fire.Assault rifles are now the standard firearm in most modern armies. The power of the cartridges used with such rifles is chosen so as to diminish the effects of recoil during automatic fire while remaining powerful enough to be effective at those ranges over which firefights typically occur.Automatic rifles that employ more powerful cartridges, such as the FN Fal (see quot. 1984) are typically called battle rifles.
