Etymology: < French Art Déco (1966, in the catalogue of the exhibition referred to in quot. 1966, and in occasional earlier use), shortened < art décoratif, lit. ‘decorative art’ (from the name of the exhibition L'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925) < art art n.¹ + décoratif decorative adj.The contemporary name for the style in France in the 1920s and 1930s was style moderne. A plural form arts déco. (and variants) is found in occasional earlier use in French and hence sporadically in English, e.g.:1928 Transition 14 269 Rodchenko’s interior of a worker’s club at the 1925 exhibition in Paris was conspicuously genuine in the midst of ‘arts déco.’ confectionery.

A style of design (in textiles, jewellery, ceramics, furniture, architecture, etc.) first popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and characterized by precise and strongly delineated geometric shapes and bold colour contrasts.

2003 A. W. Purvis & M. F. Le Coultre Graphic Design 20th Cent. 136 Art Déco was the popular international style during the 1930s. Although it can be seen as a last extension of Art Nouveau, its geometric-based forms reflect Cubism, Futurism, and Dada.
