Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Indiana.
Etymology: < Indiana, the name of one of the Midwest states of the United States < Indian adj. + -a suffix1. The reason for use in sense 3 is unclear.The Indiana territory was created in 1800, with the division of the Northwest Territory (see quot. 1800 at sense 1). The name Indiana was apparently adopted earlier (c1765) for a tract of land ceded to a Philadelphia trading company by the Iroquois; this land was subsequently (c1798) absorbed by Virginia.
