Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin infector.
Etymology: < classical Latin infector dyer, in post-classical Latin also corrupter of morals (12th cent. in a British source) < infect- , past participial stem of inficere infect v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French infecteur person who spreads a contagious disease (16th cent. in an isolated attestation), corrupter of morals (1552). Compare earlier infecter n.
A person who or thing which infects another or spreads infection. Also (figurative) a corrupter of morals.
