Etymology: < indigen- (in indigenous adj.) + -ism suffix, perhaps after Spanish indigenismo (1845 or earlier). Compare indigenismo n.Compare Portuguese indigenismo (1874).
Advocacy or support for indigenous people, esp. in a country (formerly) colonized or settled by Europeans; spec. the policy (esp. in Latin American countries) of increasing the involvement, influence, or representation of indigenous people in public policy, culture, education, employment, etc. (cf. indigenismo n.). Also: a movement or style in (chiefly Latin American) literature or art in which indigenous people and their languages, culture, etc., are a primary focus.rare before 1940.In quot. 1917 in historical context, apparently with reference to an early 19th cent. movement to establish an indigenous monarchy over part of Spanish South America.
