Etymology: < (i) French individuité state of being indivisible (1605 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin individuitat-, individuitas indivisibility (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), individuality (from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin indīviduus (see individuous adj.) + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare individuality n.
1. The state or quality of being individually owned. Obsolete.Apparently an isolated use.
