Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on scientific Latin lexical items. Etymons: a- prefix6, Greek βράγχια , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < a- prefix6 + ancient Greek βράγχια gills (see branchiae n.) + -al suffix1, after the French and scientific Latin plural nouns cited at abranchiate adj. Compare earlier branchial adj. and slightly earlier abranchiate adj. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ăbræ·ŋkiăl) /əˈbræŋkɪəl/.
Zoology. Now rare.
