Origin: A borrowing from Icelandic. Probably also partly a borrowing from Danish. Etymons: Icelandic Ásgarðr; Danish Asgård.
Etymology: Ultimately (probably via Danish Asgård) < Old Icelandic Ásgarðr < áss (see Aesir n.) + garðr enclosure, dwelling (see yard n.1).
Scandinavian Mythology.
(The name of) the celestial realm inhabited by the group of gods known as the Aesir (cf. Aesir n.), in which Valhalla is situated. Cf. Midgard n. 1.
