Etymology: < a- prefix1 + Old English sc(e)amian to shame v. Compare Middle High German erschamen, modern German erschämen.
1. intransitive. To feel shame, to be ashamed. (In quot. c1305 aschame may be imperative, or perhaps noun formed on the verb.) Obsolete; but see ashamed adj.
