Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Arthrodira.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Arthrodira, order name ( A. S. Woodward Catal. Fossil Fishes Brit. Museum (1891) II. p. xxi: see quot. 1891) < ancient Greek ἄρθρον joint (see arthro- comb. form) + δειρή (Attic δέρη ) neck (see derotremate adj.).Compare the following:1891 A. S. Woodward Catal. Fossil Fishes Brit. Mus. II. p. xxi For this order the name Arthrodira is suggested, in allusion to the ginglymoid articulation by which the cranial shield is hinged upon the anterior border of the armour of the abdominal region in the typical and best known genera.

Palaeontology.

A member of the extinct order Arthrodira of placoderm fishes, which are known from Devonian fossil deposits and have a bony head-shield that is articulated at the neck to another bony shield covering the upper part of the body.
