Compare Old French intellectualité faculty of understanding, intelligence (13th cent. in an isolated attestation), French intellectualité (1784), Catalan intel·lectualitat (14th cent.), Spanish intelectualidad (late 16th cent.), Italian intellettualità (14th cent.; rare before 19th cent.), all in sense ‘quality or state of being intellectual’.
