单词 | interrobang |
释义 | interrobangn. A nonstandard punctuation mark (‽), combining a question mark and exclamation point, used to indicate a question expressed in an exclamatory manner.Although the concept of the interrobang was developed in the early 1960s (see quot. 1962), the punctuation mark did not appear in a typeface until 1967 (see quot. 1967). It remains nonstandard, perhaps because the simpler option of a question mark followed by an exclamation point (?!) can serve the same purpose. ΚΠ 1962 Type Talks Mar.-Apr. 8/1 Here's a hypothetical (but not implausible) headline: 'What? A Refrigerator That Makes Its Own Ice Cubes?' Probably the first question mark is suitable. The second might more advantageously be replaced by an exclamation point. But better yet—How about a single symbol that could be used in both instances? We might call such a remark an exclamaquest, or (please vote for this one) an interrobang. 1967 Tel.-Herald (Dubuque, Iowa) 29 Aug. 4/4 The interobang has been included in a new type face, Americana, manufactured by the American Type Founders Company. 1997 Amer. Music Teacher 46 2/2 Interrobang is the first new mark of punctuation to be proposed for the English language since 1671. 2006 Personal Computer World May 155/3 Another favourite, the interrobang—a combination of question and exclamation marks that you might want to use at the end of a sentence such as ‘You paid how much for those shoes?!’—lives at U+203D. This is a new entry (OED Third Edition, December 2020; most recently modified version published online March 2022). < n.1962 |
