Etymology: < the name of King Arthur + -ian suffix. Compare Arthur n.King Arthur is a legendary British king supposed to have lived in or before the 6th cent., in the time between the withdrawal of the Romans and the Anglo-Saxon supremacy. He is the subject of a number of literary works from the 12th cent. onwards, most notably one of the main cycles of European medieval romances. Forms of the name of this figure in other languages include: Welsh Arthur (13th cent., in texts that were probably composed much earlier), post-classical Latin Arthur, Arthurus, Arturus (9th cent.), Anglo-Norman Arthure, Anglo-Norman and Old French Artur, Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French Artus, Arthur, Middle French Arthus (mid 12th cent.; French Arthus, Arthur), Middle High German Artūs (German Artus).
