Etymology: < Ottoman Turkish islām the Muslim religion, a Muslim (Turkish islam ) and its etymon Arabic islām the Muslim religion, literally ‘submission or resignation (to the will of God)’, noun of action < aslama to submit oneself to the will of God, to surrender, ultimately < salima to be or become safe, secure, or free. The underlying Arabic verb is also the ultimate source of salaam n. and Muslim n. With sense 2a compare French islam (1697), and also slightly earlier Mahometanism n., Mohammedism n., and earlier Mahometism n.With sense 1 compare the following slightly earlier quot. showing a different form, which may reflect transmission of the Turkish word via a language of Ottoman-ruled eastern Europe:1603 R. The Muslim religion, based on belief in one God, Allah, and in the prophet Muhammad as the messenger of God, whose sacred text is the Qu’ran (see Qur'an n.); the followers of this religion collectively, the Muslim world.
