Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Islam n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < Islam n. + -ic suffix, probably after post-classical Latin islamicus (1657 or earlier) or French islamique (1772 or earlier). Compare German islamisch (1777 or earlier), Italian islamico (1785 or earlier), and also Arabic islāmī ( < islām Islam n. + -i suffix2). Compare earlier Muslim adj.
1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of Islam; Muslim; conforming with Muslim practice or tradition. Of a political party, etc.: advocating a society ordered according to Muslim principles.
