Etymology: < in- prefix1 + see v. Compare earlier inseer n. N.E.D. (1900) records an earlier sense ‘To look upon; to see’, but this results from an editorial misreading of myskþ in the following:c1350 (a1333) William of Shoreham in Relig. Poems (1849) 155 The merr[i]er hyt hys ine batayle, Thet insykth [MS myskþ, emended in 1902 ed. to me sykþ] al the vomen [= foemen] faylle, And falle a-doun.
