Etymology: < classical Latin Asiānus Asian adj. + -ic suffix. Compare earlier Asiatic adj. and Asian adj. With sense 1 compare Asianist adj. 1, Asianism n. 2.Compare Middle High German asiānisch (in an apparently isolated attestation in sense 2; the usual German word in this sense is asiatisch Asiatic adj.), German asianisch (1848 or earlier in sense 1), and (both rare) French asianique (1827 or earlier in sense 2, 1887 or earlier in sense 1), Italian asianico (1859 or earlier in sense 2, 1899 or earlier in sense 1).
1. Classical History. Of oratorical or literary style: elaborate, rhythmic, and emotive, in a manner held to be characteristic of the Greeks of Asia Minor of the third to first centuries b.c. Contrasted with Attic. Cf. Asianist adj. 1.
