With reference to oratorical or literary style: the quality of being elaborate, rhythmic, and emotive, in a manner held to be characteristic of the Greeks of Asia Minor of the third to first centuries b.c. Occasionally also as a count noun: an instance or example of this. Contrasted with Atticism. Cf. Asianism n. 2. Now chiefly Classical History. [Quot. 1735 is taken from a long footnote in which the author is translating a passage from S. Desmarets Brevis Refutatio Praefationis Apologeticae (1658), the Latin original preceding the translation.
