Etymology: < Latin insurgĕre to rise upon or to, < in- (in- prefix3) + surgĕre to rise. In form and sense partly through French: compare (in sense 1) Old French s'insurgir (1414 in Godefroy), and (in sense 3) modern French s'insurger (16th cent. in Godefroy Compl.).
Now rare.
1. intransitive. To arise, spring up. (= Old French ensourdre, s'insurgir). Obsolete.
