Physiology and Psychology.
Originally: sensation arising from stimulation of receptors within the gastrointestinal tract. In later use more generally: sensation arising from stimulation of receptors within the viscera and other deep tissues within the body; perception or awareness of the inner state of the body.Cf. earlier interoceptor n., interoceptive adj. at interoceptor n. Derivatives.
