assignn.2

Brit. /əˈsʌɪn/, U.S. /əˈsaɪn/
Forms: Also Middle English–1600s assigne.
Etymology: Middle English assigne (three syllables), < French assigné, past participle of assigner to assign v., has split into two forms in modern English assign and assignee . In the former, Middle English -e (like final -e from other sources) became mute in 15th cent., and disappeared in modern English. (Compare avow(e , French avoué < Latin advocātus ; costive , French costivé < Latin constipātus , etc.) In the latter, final -e was preserved through the influence of Law French, and was at length analogically written -ee . (Compare avowee , advowee , beside avow(e .) The 15th cent. assigne might represent either pronunciation, and belongs equally to assign and assignee . Compare assignee adj. and n.
