Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: iron n.1, sand n.1
Etymology: < iron n.1 + sand n.1 In sense 2 after French sable de fer (1757 or earlier; 1778 in the passage translated in quot. 1803), itself after Chinese tiěshā ( < tiě iron + shā sand, grit).
1. Geology. Sand containing particles of iron ore, typically magnetite.
