Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: iron n.1, tree n.
Etymology: < iron n.1 + tree n., so called on account of the hardness of the timber and (in sense (a)) also on account of its weight. Compare ironwood n.With sense (a) compare Chinese tiělìmù (see ironwood n.). With sense (b) compare Portuguese pau ferro , †pao ferro (1648 or earlier denoting a tree of Brazil; compare the note at ironwood n.). In quot. 1671 after Dutch †ijzerboom (1670 in the passage translated), itself apparently after Chinese tiěshù sago cycas ( Cycas revoluta), lit. ‘iron tree’.
Any of several trees and shrubs yielding very hard heavy wood; spec. (a) Mesua ferrea (family Calophyllaceae), native to Sri Lanka and introduced in parts of South-East Asia; (b) Caesalpinia ferrea (family Caesalpiniaceae ( Leguminosae)) of Brazil and other parts of South America. Cf. ironwood n. 2.
