Etymology: < participial stem of Latin inundāre ( < in- (in- prefix3) + undāre to flow): see -ate suffix3. The stress is now mostly on the first syllable, though this is not found in the dictionaries before c1880; later dictionaries still give preference to iˈnundate . See note to contemplate v.
1. transitive. To overspread with a flood of water; to overflow, flood.
