Origin: A borrowing from Greenlandic Inuit and Yupik. Etymons: Greenlandic Inuit inuk, Yupik -pik.
Etymology: Formed within English < inu- (in Greenlandic Inuit inuk Inuk n.) + Yupik -pik (see Yupik adj.).Introduced by Morris Swadesh to highlight the phonological differences between the language groups, which can be observed in the respective words for ‘person, human being’ (compare quot. 1951 at sense A.). In the form Inupic perhaps influenced by -ic suffix; compare Yupic at Yupik n. and adj. Forms.
