Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French artilleur.
Etymology: < Middle French artilleur machinist (13th cent. in Old French), maker of arms (1334), person in charge of the supply and maintenance of engines of war (1418 as maistre arthilleur ; compare also Anglo-Norman attillour ) < artillier (see artillery n.) + -eur -our suffix. Compare post-classical Latin artillator (1360 in a British source). Compare slightly earlier artiller n.
Obsolete.
An artillery officer.
