Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: invest v., -ive suffix.
Etymology: < invest v. + -ive suffix. N.E.D. (1900) notes that a spurious sense ‘Encircling; enclosing’ is recorded in H. J. Todd Johnson's Dict. Eng. Lang. (1818) and later dictionaries, based on a misreading of infestive in the following quot.:1610 R. Niccols England's Eliza in Mirour for Magistrates (new ed.) 829 Th'horrid fire all mercilesse did choake The scorched wretches with infestiue smoake.
That invests (in various senses of the verb); of, relating to, or constituting investment; (Law) that has the function or effect of investing someone with a legal right or obligation. Cf. investitive adj.
