Etymology: < participial stem of Latin invigilāre to watch over, < in- (in- prefix3) + vigilāre to watch. Compare Italian invigilare ‘watchfullie to studie or take paines’ (Florio, 1598).
1. intransitive. To keep watch; to watch carefully. Now spec. To watch over students at examination.
