isohydric1887
1887 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 52 i. 415 The molecular conductivity of a mixture of butyric and acetic acid solutions in any proportions is always the sum of the molecular conductivities of the constituent solutions. Each electrolyte behaves as if the other were absent. Such solutions are termed by the author [sc. S. Arrhenius] ‘isohydric’.
1899 J. Walker Introd. Physical Chem. xxv. 288 Let there be prepared isohydric solutions of the different salts, NaCl being made isohydric with NaBr, by getting the sodium ions of the same concentration in both solutions.
1900 Speaker 9 June 283 The isohydric theorem of Arrhenius.
1902 Encycl. Brit. XXVIII. 14/1 The concentration of the hydrogen ions should be the same in each separate solution. Such solutions were called by Arrhenius, ‘isohydric’.
1930 S. Glasstone Electrochem. Solutions viii. 151 Solutions of acids which do not change their ionization on mixing are said to be isohydric with one another.
1952 J. E. Ricci Hydrogen Ion Concentration ii. 26 We shall here examine the conditions for the validity of the theorem of isohydric solutions, that isohydric solutions (solutions of the same H) mix without change of H.
b. Physiology. Occurring without causing any change in the pH of the blood: applied to the reactions by which carbon dioxide is removed from the tissues and taken up by the blood.

1946 J. F. Fulton Howell's Textbk. Physiol. (ed. 15) xxxix. 887 This series of chemical reactions in the erythrocyte has been designated as the isohydric cycle because the uptake of CO2 and the release of O2 is accomplished without the production of an excess of H+.
1954 A. White et al. Princ. Biochem. xxvi. 691 The isohydric shift entails formation of about 0·7 meq. of bicarbonate for each millimole of oxygen which dissociates from oxyhemoglobin.
1970 R. W. McGilvery Biochemistry xxv. 612 This action of the Bohr effect to permit the blood to take up CO2 without a change in pH is known as the isohydric carriage of CO2.
