1943 I. Banga in Stud. Inst. Med. Chem. Univ. Szeged III. 67 When ADP had been incubated with isomerase, the product was split by actomyosin which suggested that isomerase had changed the molecular structure of ADP. It was for this reason that the name isomerase was given to the new protein.

1953 Jrnl. Biol. Chem. 201 83 Escherichia coli contains an adaptive isomerase catalyzing the equilibrium, d-arabinose ⇌ d-ribulose.

1972 J. R. Whitaker Princ. Enzymol. for Food Scientists xiv. 417 The ‘isomerases’ are enzymes which bring about an isomerization of the substrate. The name is formed on the order ‘substrate prefix-isomerase’. The prefix indicates the type of isomerization involved, e.g., ‘maleate cis-trans-isomerase’.
