Etymology: < Italian isonomia ‘equalitie of laws to all manner of persons’ (Florio, 1598), perhaps also in 16th cent. Latin, < Greek ἰσονομία , noun of quality < ἰσόνομος having equal political rights, < ἰσο- , iso- comb. form + νόμος law. Frequent in 17th cent.; obsolete in 18th; used again in 19th.
Equality of laws, or of people before the law; equality of political rights among the citizens of a state.
