Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French astronomique; Latin astronomicus.
Etymology: < (i) French astronomique of or relating to astronomy (1535 in Middle French; 14th cent. in sense ‘(of a path) celestial, written in the stars’; 1858 in sense 2, but rare in this sense before the first half of the 20th cent.), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin astronomicus (4th or 5th cent.) < ancient Greek ἀστρονομικός skilled in astronomy, relating to astronomy < ἀστρονομία (see astronomy n.) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Franco-Provençal astronique (first half of the 14th cent.), Spanish astronómico (a1428; 1923 or earlier in sense 2), Portuguese astronômico (a1542), Italian astronomico (a1536; c1930 in sense 2), German astronomisch (a1531; early 19th cent. in sense 2). Compare earlier astronomical adj.
