Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Ionen.
Etymology: < German Ionen (F. Tiemann & P. Krüger 1893, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 26 2693) < ancient Greek ἴον violet (see ionone n.) + German -en -ene comb. form. Compare ionone n.
Chemistry.
An oily liquid obtained on elimination of a water molecule from α- or β-ionone.Ionene is a bicyclic compound. Systematic name: 4,4,7-trimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-naphthalene; C13H18.
