Etymology: < classical Latin ipse himself (also herself, itself, oneself) < i- , endingless nominative, beside is he (see id n.3) + -p- , of uncertain origin + -se < the same Indo-European base as the adj. With classical Latin ipse compare Oscan essuf , Umbrian esuf , both in sense ‘himself’, although the etymological interpretation of these forms is not clear.
