Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἀρτο- , ἄρτος , -later comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀρτο-, combining form of ἄρτος bread (see artotyrite n.) + -later comb. form. Compare post-classical Latin artolatra or artolatres (1608 or earlier). Compare slightly later artolatry n.
Christian Church. rare. Now chiefly historical.
A person who practises artolatry or the adoration of the host (see artolatry n.); one who is accused of this.
