Etymology: < the genitive of the name of Christopher Johnston (1822–91), United States physician, who first described the organ in 1855 ( Quarterly Jrnl. Microscopic Sci. 3 97–102) + organ n.¹, after German Johnston'sches Organ (C. M. Child 1894, in Zeitschr. f. wiss. Zoologie 58 480, the paper reviewed in quot. 1895).

Entomology.

In the second antennal segment of most insects, a sense organ which detects movements of the antennal flagellum, esp. due to sound or mechanical vibrations, and functions chiefly in flight control and sound perception.
