Etymology: < the genitive of the name of Christopher Johnston (1822–91), United States physician, who first described the organ in 1855 ( Quarterly Jrnl. Microscopic Sci. 3 97–102) + organ n.1, after German Johnston'sches Organ (C. M. Child 1894, in Zeitschr. f. wiss. Zoologie 58 480, the paper reviewed in quot. 1895).
Entomology.
In the second antennal segment of most insects, a sense organ which detects movements of the antennal flagellum, esp. due to sound or mechanical vibrations, and functions chiefly in flight control and sound perception.

1895 Johns Hopkins Univ. Circulars June 73/2 Dr. Child..has studied the structure of this antennary organ and traced its development. He..finds that the organ, which he calls after its discoverer Johnston's organ, occurs widely among insects.
1950 V. J. Wulff & C. L. Prosser in C. L. Prosser Compar. Animal Physiol. xiv. 509 In flies the antennal sense organ, Johnston's organ, is sensitive to wind velocity and elicits postural changes according to speed of air flow.
2007 Yorks. Post (Nexis) 9 Feb. Antennae were amputated just above the Johnston's organ and the insects observed as they flew inside a dimly-lit glass chamber.
