Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Jacques Bonhomme.
Etymology: < French Jacques Bonhomme, generic name for a peasant (1359 in Middle French as Jaque Bonhome ) < Jacques , male forename, also as noun jacques peasant (see Jack n.2 and compare Jacquerie n.) + Bonhomme commoner, peasant (see Bonhomme n.).
Now chiefly historical.
In France: (a generic name for) a peasant or (later) an ordinary working man; peasants or workers considered collectively.
