Etymology: < French jet d'eau (1659), lit. ‘jet of water’ < jet jet n.3 + de de prep. + eau eau n. Compare earlier jetto n. and later jetteau n.In plural form jets d'eau after the French plural form. N.E.D. (1900) only records the non-naturalized pronunciation (ʒęˌdō) /ʒɛdoː/.
An ornamental jet of water emitted from a fountain or pipe. Also: a fountain or pipe from which such a jet issues.
