单词 jet set
释义

jet setn.adj.

Brit. /ˈdʒɛt sɛt/, U.S. /ˈdʒɛt ˌsɛt/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: jet n.3, set n.2
Etymology: < jet n.3 (compare jet n.3 10) + set n.2 (compare set n.2 3a).The term is usually attributed to Igor Cassini (1915–2002), U.S. journalist, who in the late 1940s and 1950s wrote regular gossip columns in U.S. newspapers under the pseudonym ‘Cholley Knickerbocker’. The group of people concerned was apparently originally so called by Cassini on account of the speed at which they lived. In later use (from the 1960s onwards, after the beginning of scheduled flights operated by jet aircraft in 1952) the term came to be taken as denoting people who frequently used jet aircraft for travel, then a still rare mode of transport only affordable for a small number of wealthy passengers.
colloquial.
Wealthy and fashionable people, esp. those who travel widely and frequently for pleasure, regarded as a social group. In early use more generally: (young) people regarded as living life at a fast pace. Frequently with the, and attributive or as adj.
