Etymology: < Middle French, French abstersion (2nd half of the 14th cent.) and its etymon post-classical Latin abstersion-, abstersio action of wiping away (4th or 5th cent.) < classical Latin absters- , past participial stem of abstergēre absterge v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Old Occitan abstercio (c1350), Catalan abstersió (late 15th cent.), Spanish abstersión (a1450), Portuguese abstersão (1767), Italian astersione (c1350).
Now archaic and rare.
